Ritz-Carlton Residences

The base of this building is the Chronicle Building of 1890, widely described as California's first skyscraper and now San Francisco Landmark No. 243. Its clock tower burned in 1905, the interior was gutted in the 1906 fire, and Willis Polk rebuilt it. A restoration completed in 2007 returned the sandstone facade toward its original appearance using roughly 1,000 replacement blocks carved from Sespe sandstone, and new floors were added above the historic structure for the residential conversion. Sources disagree on how many floors were added, so I have not put a number on it.
