What it feels like to live here

Bernal Heights rises just south of the Mission around its grassy hilltop park, one of the sunniest and most community-minded neighborhoods in the city. Cortland Avenue is its main street, the views from Bernal Hill are some of the best around, and the vibe is friendly, walkable, and a little village-like despite being close to the center of town.

Who it tends to fit

People who want sun, views, a strong community feel, and proximity to the Mission and downtown, often families, professionals, and longtime locals.

Housing types

A varied mix of smaller single-family homes, cottages, and flats on hilly, sometimes narrow streets. Lots and layouts vary widely with the terrain.

Transit and commute

Several bus lines connect to the Mission, BART, and downtown, and I-280 and US-101 are close for drivers. Walkability is strong near Cortland.

Parks, food, coffee, and local anchors

Cortland Avenue's cafes, restaurants, and shops, Bernal Hill's open space and panoramic views, and quick access to the Mission's food and culture.

Buyer considerations
